How to Choose the Perfect Coffee Table

As you’re staring at your living room, reaching to set down a nice, hot cup of delicious coffee, you start to realize how out of place your current coffee table looks. You got it a few years ago, and it’s certainly seen better days, but you’re not even sure where to start with finding a new one. The old thing has some coffee stains on it, so maybe you want one that’s easier to clean, but what if it’s too big? What if it’s not the right style or color? How do you find the perfect coffee table for your space?

How Big of a Coffee Table Do I Need?

First things first: make sure you’re looking for the right size table. Typically, this table shouldn’t be taller than your seat cushions; you shouldn’t feel like you’re sitting at a dinner table. Take a tape measure and find out the height of your seat cushions to the floor, and take off an inch or two if you don’t want the coffee table at your knees. This will be the height of the table you should look out for.

The width is something you need to pay attention to as well. A coffee table is normally about two-thirds the length of your sofa or couch. So, measure the length of your couch, divide it by three, and there’s your width!

What About the Shape or Style?

Part of this is personal preference, and the other part is making sure it matches the rest of the furniture in your living room. If your living room has a more modern, dark-toned feel to it, then you don’t want to purchase a pastel pink coffee table.

When it comes to shape, you have to think about how your furniture is arranged. You’ll want the coffee table to be placed in front of your sofa, right about in the middle. A round table may not look right if you have one, rectangular sofa, but it could fit in perfectly if you have a corner couch that goes along two walls.

Style really depends on what the rest of your living room looks like too. Are you looking for a more rustic or modern feel? Does your living room have more dark colors, or does it need a bit more light in it? These are all things you need to think about when trying to pick out a style for your new coffee table.

Can a Coffee Table Have Other Functions?

Yes! Some types of coffee tables can provide extra storage or shelving for you, and some can even pull out into another small dining table when you want to watch TV while you eat. If you just want a place to set your drink, then that’s perfectly fine too. Don’t throw out the idea of getting a nice ottoman or lift-top table though. You never know when it might be useful to you!
