Design Mixology: How to use texture in your décor

When it comes to adding texture to your Florida home, think in terms of the process being more like a marathon than
a sprint. Creating a welcoming environment that’s visually engaging – and one with plenty of movement – takes time.
And it’s good to keep in mind that the journey is just as rewarding as the final destination.

From finding just the right rug that captures that coastal vibe to zeroing in on a piece of furniture that ups the wow
factor, here are five easy ways to layer on texture that will take your space from flat to fabulous.

1. Pile on the Pillows

Textiles, such as pillows and throws, offer one of the easiest ways to bring in texture. They’re also super simple to swap
out depending on the season (or your mood).

For instance, our Kiawah Sofa, with its plush, creamy upholstery, creates the perfect canvas for arranging a pillowscape
in sea-inspired hues. Set atop elegant, rounded legs fitted with casters, the sofa’s clean, simple lines work well in
traditional and modern settings alike. The decorative pillows are included, so it couldn’t be any easier to bring a curated
look home.

In the fall and winter months, prop with a plush faux fur throw over one arm, or trade in those cool blue hues for warmer
tones ranging from rust to rich red.

Style tip: If using a tonal palette, you can easily bring in a tactile touch with everything from chunky cable knits to
embroidered motifs to ornamental trim, such as pom-poms.

2. Roll Out the Carpet

With so many styles to choose from, an area rug brings in plenty of depth and dimension. Go au naturel with fiber-based
options, such as jute or sisal, that perfectly nail that laid-back, luxe look that Florida is so famous for.

Natural fiber also lends itself to layering with other floor coverings, acting as a neutral base that just begs for the addition
of pattern or color, like our handwoven Rio Vista rug. It gets its beachy attitude from bold stripes and extra points for
having tasseled ends.

3. Mix Things Up

Furniture may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re contemplating ways to introduce texture into a
room, but it can absolutely be the missing piece that takes your space to the next level. The key is bringing in the right
mix of materials.

Our Giovanni Entertainment Console does just that, instantly energizing your space with an intricate mosaic of bone
that’s inlaid by highly skilled artisans against slate-paneled doors. Beautifully crafted of mango wood, prized for its rich
variations in grain and color, no two consoles will be exactly alike. A thin, charcoal-hued metal base places all the attention
on the main attraction.

4. Lighten the Mood

A thoughtful mix of lighting fixtures can really infuse your space with unexpected texture, and varying your light
sources helps achieve the perfect balance of form and function. Top floor or table lamps with a touch-worthy shade
(think woven seagrass, silk, linen, velvet).

Overhead, consider the opulence of a sparkling crystal chandelier or the relaxed warmth of a natural rattan pendant.
A few well-placed hurricanes in metal and glass set on a coffee table or next to the fireplace also invite texture in.

5. Go Green

You can’t overlook the power of plants. They add balance, color and texture to any space, as do the containers they’re
planted in. From an artisanal vase with the look of a found object to a burnt terracotta pot, the options are limitless.

Try placing a tall floor plant like a bird of paradise on one end of the sofa and add a floor lamp to the opposite side for
a bit of symmetry. Or, place small potted plants, such as succulents, on a bookshelf interspersed with artwork, framed
photos and other decorative items.

With nature’s perfectly imperfect assortment of textures, sizes and shades, plants have the uncanny ability to soften
lines and prevent spaces from looking sterile. They also act as perfect fillers to any odd nook or corner. The takeaway:
More plants equals more interest.
