4 Mattress Myths Busted: Our Experts Weigh In
It’s not every day that you buy a brand new mattress (quite a relief, right?). So, when you do decide to get one, you want to make an informed purchase. Indeed, you want to break through the clutter of information in the mattress sector and zero in on what matters most to you—a perfect sleep. To help you acquire the mattress that’s best for you, the experts at Matter Brothers Furniture & Mattress have debunked four of the most common mattress myths today.
Let’s dive right in!
Mattress Myths 1: You Should Replace Your Mattress Every 8 Years
Both Healthline and Sleep Foundation recommend replacing your mattress every 6 to 8 years.
Of course, this is an umbrella guideline and not a one-size-fits-all solution. Generally, though, you should replace your mattress if one of the following applies:
- If it’s 6-8+ years
- You frequently wake up with joint and muscle pains
- It’s negatively impacting your sleep
- You find that you sleep better elsewhere (i.e., at your friend’s house)
- It’s visibly saggy and damaged in particular areas
The truth is that the lifespan of a mattress varies widely, depending on how often you rotate it, how you sleep on it, and how you take care of it. The moment you start wondering whether or not it’s time to replace your mattress, then chances are it is.
Myth 2: The Perfect Mattress Will Prevent Tossing and Turning
Well, we hate to break it to you, but no mattress can prevent tossing and turning. The best any mattress can do is minimize the tossing.
You see, an adult moves as much as 13 times an hour at night—whether that’s a full-out roll or a simple twitch. A good mattress will minimize how much you move while sleeping by evenly distributing pressure.
Myth 3: You Should Purchase a Mattress with the Longest Warranty Possible
A longer warranty doesn’t necessarily mean that your mattress’s life expectancy is high.
Besides, mattress warranties only cover physical defects in the product. That includes cover coils breaking and popping out of the side, the boxspring breaking, the seams coming out of the mattress, or any other physical defect not directly caused by the customer.
To be on the safe side, read the warranty carefully when buying a new mattress. Familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions. Perhaps worth noting is that a new warranty is not issued when you replace your mattress.
Mattress Myths 4: You Should Flip Your Mattress Every Now and Then
For decades, the common advice in the mattress industry was to flip your mattress regularly to improve comfort and extend its lifespan.
Newsflash: this mattress myth no longer applies.
Unless the manufacturer recommends otherwise, you should never flip your mattress. The truth is, most modern mattresses are designed to be one-sided, meaning their design does not support flipping.
Not convinced? Here’s a brief insight into how modern mattresses are designed:
- On the upper side of the mattress, one or more thick layers of polyfoam (or other materials), make up the “comfort system.”
- At the bottom of the mattress, a sturdy, relatively thick support layer usually made of dense foam and/or metal springs make up the “support core.”
- On top of the mattress is a removable pad or cover that serves to protect the mattress. Some covers also protect the sleeper from allergens and irritants such as bed bugs, dust mites, dead skin (like dandruff), and mold.
Rather than flipping your mattress, it’s prudent to rotate it. Rotating helps to distribute the wear and tear that comes with sleeping in the same position on your mattress every night. Besides, a frequently rotated mattress will outlast a non-rotated mattress by at least 12 months. So, aim to make this your practice once you buy a new mattress.
