Easy Tips for Keeping Your Memory Foam Mattress Clean

Easy Tips for Keeping Your Memory Foam Mattress Clean

Memory foam mattresses are one of the most popular mattress choices and for good reason. By providing the perfect balance of support and comfort, memory foam mattresses make getting a restful night’s sleep a breeze. But what about keeping them clean? To ensure that your mattress stays in tip-top shape for years to come, keep it free from messes, especially liquids. Fortunately, caring for your memory foam mattress is easier than you may think. Check out these simple tips from Matter Brothers Furniture to help your memory foam mattress look, feel, and smell as good as new.

Vacuum Regularly

To combat the dust, hair, and debris that can build up on your mattress’s surface over time, vacuum it regularly. Since vacuuming your mattress might be a difficult chore to remember, try to tackle this task when you change your sheets (about once a week). While a handheld vacuum works best, a brush attachment on a standing vacuum would also suffice. If you have a pet, it can be helpful to use a vacuum designed especially for pet hair and dander. Don’t forget to go over the sides of the mattress, as well as over any buttons or crevices.

Remove Stains Quickly

If you come across a stain on your mattress, be sure to treat it right away. Letting a stain sit can make it harder to remove and even potentially damage the foam. For dried stains, mix 1 part mild detergent with 2 parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the cleaning mixture over the stain, then gently scrub in a circular motion with a microfiber rag. When the stain has lifted, use a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining solution. For stains that are harder to remove, mix 1 part vinegar with 3 parts water in a spray bottle and repeat the steps of lightly spraying and scrubbing. After the stain is gone, absorb any excess water by plotting a dry towel over the area, then using a fan or sunshine to finish drying.

Get Rid of Urine Stains

Memory foam is particularly absorbent, so bed-wetting from young children or puppies can put your comfy mattress in jeopardy if not addressed quickly. To remove urine from your memory foam mattress, absorb as much of the urine as possible with paper towels. Then, cover the area with a light spray of white vinegar and use more paper towels to absorb any remaining liquid. Next, sprinkle baking soda over the damp area and leave it for 10 hours. Finally, vacuum up the leftover baking soda.

Memory Foam Maintenance Tips

The best way to keep your memory foam mattress clean is to prevent it from getting dirty in the first place. Check out these tips to make sure your memory foam mattress stays pristine for the long haul:

  • Cover your mattress with a liquid-resistant protective covering.
  • Rotate your mattress every 6 months.
  • Position your mattress in the sunlight to keep it fresh and deodorized.
  • Wash your mattress cover every week.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals, including bleach, when spot-cleaning your mattress.
