That’s why we have dining rooms and a dining room table. Putting it all together is a little more complicated than just grabbing a table and tossing it somewhere, though. Whether you’re getting some family and friends together for Thanksgiving or hosting that fancy dinner party<\/a><\/span>\u00a0you’ve always dreamed of, a good dining room table will be key. Let’s take a look at dining room tables and how to figure out how big yours should be.<\/p>\n

Finding the Ideal Size for a Dining Room Table<\/h2>\n

Dining room tables come in all shapes and sizes. So, it’s not always easy to know what to buy for your space. When you’re shopping around, there are usually two major factors that affect your decision: room size and how many it seats.<\/p>\n

In general, a good rule of thumb is to take the total length and width of your dining room, then subtract six feet on either side. For example, if your room is 30 feet by 22 feet, you’ll want a table no bigger than 24 feet by 16 feet. That gives you three feet of room on either side when the table is at the center.<\/p>\n

In addition to this, you also want to decide how many people are going to be using your table at once. If you’re a family of four, your size requirements are going to be a lot different from a home that regularly has 20 or more people sitting down to eat together. Having a table that’s too large for the few that sit at it is almost as bad as one that’s far too small. People need at least two feet of space between each other to sit comfortably at a table.<\/p>\n

Extra Considerations<\/h2>\n

Size isn’t the only thing that matters when you have a dining room table. In fact, there’s a lot of potential problems that can occur even if a table fits the standards. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to furnishing your home, after all.<\/p>\n

One of the more common problems is accounting for the other furniture in the room. Depending on who you are, your dining room might also contain cabinets with plates and silverware, other tables, or any number of other things you can’t be expected to move every time you want to eat. If they’re particularly big, you’ll need to account for that by shortening your table accordingly.<\/p>\n

Placement is another issue, as not every dining room table sits in the exact center of a perfectly rectangular room. Square rooms, for example, are typically better served by a circular table. They allow more room for people to sit and make taking things from the center much easier. If your dining room has doors, you might consider moving the table to the side of the room to keep walkways clear, meaning a long table that offers room for everyone.<\/p>\n
