Go Green Gently — How to Use Green in Interior Design

Go Green Gently: How to Use Green in Interior Design

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, nearly everyone agrees on the beauty of rolling green pastures, or the emerald expanses of your favorite Naples golf courses. Green is vibrant, fertile, and often associated with wealth and prosperity. But it can be quite intense! Further, since your interior design ideas are going to be something you’ll live with for a few years, it’s best to go gently with greens.

There are two ways to incorporate green into your interior design, and we’ll cover them here.

  • Either go soft and pale, for a green that’s barely there
  • Or choose saturated colors with rich brown and tan undertones, and treat them like a neutral base.

Soft, Pale Greens Look Great in Any Room

There’s plenty of lush greenery outdoors here in Florida. Your eyes take in tons of green throughout the year. So there’s no need to bring those intense colors inside, especially in a larger room like a living room. Plainly put, those tropical greens would look garish and loud.

Instead, opt for lighthearted hues like:

These tones look amazing with any neutral or warm-toned flooring, whether you have hardwood floors, laminate or carpet. Misty, pale greens will give a room a fresh, open feeling. They look great with any trims. Whether you choose white, light wood or bark brown, you’ll love the results.

Start your pale green project with the walls. Then add furniture and accents of almost any vibrant color — especially red! Then add that final pop of color like a professional with red throw pillows or wall art like our Uttermost Accessories Summer Sunset Abstract Art.

If you’re a dedicated green-ophile (yes, we made that up) and wishing for more intensity, choose kiwi greens. They’re energizing! And they look great in tiny, well-lit areas like bathrooms, re-purposed closets, dressing rooms, and small home offices. But they’re far too rich for a living room or bedroom setting.

The other way to work with greens — and not be horrified with the results — is to use them as a solid neutral base.

Use Green as a Neutral Base in Interior Design

In nature, greens become a natural backdrop for our focal points. We’re used to them. They’re comfortable! For a warm, relaxing living room, select greens that have been well-blended with tans and browns. They’ll look fabulous as wall-to-wall carpeting, or a large area rug. Then work your way up with white or neutral walls and cozy living room furniture.

Neutral Greens We Love

Check out the Pantone Institute’s 17-0535 TCX Olive Green and 19-0419 TCX Rifle Green. These saturated tones will look outstanding on your floors! If you love these rich neutral greens but are not ready to take the plunge, try them as drapery first. You can fill your eyes with an ample splash of color before committing to a carpet.

Ultimately, greens can be masculine, feminine, or completely neutral. It all depends on the intensity of the color and how you built out the rest of the room.
